Fur Mama nonprofit specializes in saving the tiniest lives
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – In the heart of our community, Fur Mama is doing more than just rescuing animals—it’s providing a specific kind of care that’s often overlooked: neonatal support for orphaned puppies and kittens.
Neonatal animals, often just days old and without their mothers, require around-the-clock care.
Without trained support, their chances of survival are slim.
“Neonatal care in particular isn’t very prevalent here in the area,” explained Abigail Mandonia, the founder of Fur Mama. “There isn’t a rescue focused on this type of work within at least a two-hour radius, and it’s something I saw lacking in our local rescue and shelter organizations.”
Right now, Fur Mama has 176 animals in its care and more than 70 others on a waiting list.
It’s a growing operation that relies heavily on the help of volunteers and the local community.
“We really can’t do it without the support of everyone around us,” emphasized Andi Phillips, the rescue’s foster coordinator. “Whether that means donating, fostering, or adopting, we’re giving these vulnerable little lives an extra shot they might not get otherwise.”
Fur Mama’s mission has inspired others to get involved.
Community member Lincoln Rice shared, “It’s really fun down here. You can have a good time and maybe find a good home for these cats and dogs.”
Many families have been forever changed by adoption.
Chloe and Ila Kennedy, who recently adopted from Fur Mama, reflected on their experience.
“Oh yeah? Never regretted it,” they said. “I think adoption is the best. I think this is what it’s all about, honestly.”
While the work is hard, the team at Fur Mama remains committed to giving a voice—and a chance—to the tiniest, most vulnerable animals.
When fostering or adopting, the organization takes care of all the health needs, training, and supplies.
They only ask that you provide a safe and loving home for these vulnerable furry friends.
