GA politics: Doug Collins won’t challenge Warnock or Kemp next year

ATLANTA, Georgia (WDEF) – A key player in Georgia politics has clarified his plans for 2022.

Former Congressman Doug Collins won the backing of many pro-Trump supporters for his spirited defense of the President in the impeachment proceedings.

But that did not translate into a victory in last fall’s Senate race against Kelly Loeffler and Raphael Warnock. He finished third in the race.

On Monday, Collins announced he will not challenge Democrat Warnock again for the Senate or Governor Brian Kemp in the Republican primary.

He was considered a major contender for both races.

But he becomes the second Republican heavy weight to decline the Senate Race, along with former Senator David Perdue.

Former football star Herschel Walker has shown interest in running against Sen. Warnock and former President Trump has encouraged him to do so.

“For those who may wonder, this is goodbye for now, but probably not forever. I do plan on staying involved in shaping our conservative message to help Republicans win back the House and the Senate and help more strong conservative candidates get elected here in Georgia.”
