Gas prices again falling faster in Chattanooga

CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – GasBuddy.com reports that gas prices dropped 3.9 cents per gallon last week in the Chattanooga area.

That is more than double the decline that we are seeing nationally.

Our average price is $1.95 compared to the national average of $2.17.

Traditionally, prices do drop after the Labor Day travel period.

“With the kids back in school we’re now at that point when gasoline demand eases and refineries also return to the cheaper ‘winter- blend’ gasoline which should start reaching consumers later this week,” said Gregg Laskoski, senior petroleum analyst for GasBuddy.

However, gas is still a nickel more expensive here than it was a year ago at this time, which is not the case nationally.

“The national average price of a gallon of gas remains 20 cents lower than the average we saw a year ago, and, coincidentally, the price of the benchmark WTI that opens this week ($46/bbl) is almost identical to where it was a year ago… all of which aligns with the seasonal retail price decline,” he added.

The cheapest gas in Chattanooga right now, according to the GasBuddy.com survey is $1.75 at the BP on Mahlon Dr in Harrison. That beats the next best price (Sam’s Club on Lee Highway) by a dime.
