GBI investigates officer involved shooting in Summerville

SUMMERVILLE, Georgia (WDEF) – The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been called in to investigate an officer involved shooting in Summerville.

Chattooga County deputies were assisting a detective with the Summerville Police Department in investigating a snatch and grab robbery that happened Monday night.

When officers went to a home looking for the suspect he took off on foot. officers lost sight of the suspect at one point. An investigator with the Sheriff’s Office spotted the suspect and another foot chased ensued.

The investigator was able to catch the suspect and there was a struggle while on the ground.

Police believe during the struggle the suspect grabbed the investigators weapon.

That is when the investigator shot the suspect in the stomach behind the World’s Church of the Living God on Highland Avenue and 7th Street.

The suspect was flown by a medical helicopter to the hospital for treatment.

There is no word yet on the suspect’s condition.
