GBI investigating their 35th officer involved shooting of 2019 in Rome

ROME, Georgia (WDEF) – The GBI will investigate the shooting of a suspect early this morning in Rome, Georgia.

Their preliminary information is that the Metro Drug Task Force and SWAT team were serving a warrant for drugs and weapons around 6:20 AM at a home on Kingston Highway.

They say that 44 year old Michael Lee Spears had the residence barricaded.

Once they breached the home, they say Spears fired on officers.

They returned fire and hit him.

He is being treated at the Floyd Medical Center.

No officers were injured.
