GEORGIA (WDEF) — WalletHub released a report on Wednesday detailing which states are struggling the most in hiring. Among those states, the survey ranked Georgia as number two.

The report reveals that labor force participation is at 62.6% in the U.S. WalletHub said that is one of the lowest rates in decades.

They also ranked Alaska as number one in that list.

Experts explained some of the reasons for labor issues in the U.S.

High Turnover Rates

Employees are starting to expect more of a work-life balance, more flexibility and better personal well-being. They are also less willing to be overworked than in the past. “This, however, has not meshed well with employers’ simultaneously increasing expectations for employee workloads and demands,” Associate Professor of the University of Alabama, Maura J. Mills said. She continued on to say the contrasting expectations have increased turnover.

A Ph.D student at the University of Memphis, Favour Olarewaju says the pandemic played a role as well. She believes it has caused workers to realize they need to make time for other aspects of their life.

What Employers Can Do

Employers should start focusing on employee experience, according to University of Arkansas Professor Claretha Hughes. “Without recognition, rewards, incentives, and pay that match their individual value to the organization, employees will continue to leave,” she said.

Hughes said companies should offer employees health packages and room for advancement as well.

It is also crucial that employers offer competitive salaries and learning opportunities, Christos A. Makridis of Stanford University explained.
