Georgia condemns, but does not ban teaching “Critical Race Theory”

ATLANTA, Georgia (WDEF) – Governor Kemp is keeping up the fight against critical race theory in Georgia.

The state’s board of education on Thursday approved a non-binding resolution declaring that the U.S. and Georgia are not racist.

The resolution also says students should not be taught that racism or slavery are anything but deviations from the country’s “authentic founding principles.”

The vote happened after the Governor send them a letter urging them to take action against Critical Race Theory.

Several Republican led states have tackled the teaching of race in schools.

Tennessee lawmakers banned the teaching in schools.

But Georgia’s resolution does not actually have the force of law.

Georgia’s Teacher of the Year is concerned that the resolution does seem to censor teachers.

But Tracey Nance Pendley adds there is nothing in it that actually limits what teachers can teach.

She considers it more of a belief statement for the state.
