Georgia Educators Association Opposes Governor’s Plan

CHATTANOOGA, TN (WDEF-TV) The Georgia Association of Educators has taken a strong stand again against the Governor’s plan for what’s call Opportunity School Districts.
The GAE thinks the plan for the state to take over failing schools for up to 5 years would mean loss of local control.
GAE president Dr. Sid Chapman is traveling the state talking to school leaders about that issue.
Chapman also says the state still requires too much testing as teachers find themselves teaching the tests instead of educating.
And, he maintains its affecting teacher morale.

DR. SID CHAPMAN, PRESIDENT, GEORGIA ASSOCIATION OF EDUCATORS
"50% of all teachers leave in the first 5 years…72% are now leaving before they make it to 10 years..something’s wrong with that picture . People who are close to retirement are saying I can’t wait to get out ..I’m even willing to take less ..leave early..let me out ..something wrong with that picture."

The plan to create Opportunity School Districts will be on the ballot next November.
