Georgia Ranks Amongst Worst States For Underprivileged Kids

GEORGIA,(WDEF)-Only children in Arizona and Mississippi fair worse than Georgia according to Wallet Hub research.

Jill Gonzalez, Wallet Hub."With the low poverty income, health wise we look at the percentage of children without health insurance coverage,  percentage of maltreated children and the child’s food and security rate within each date as well as the infant mortality and child death rate".

The research also took into account the number of children in single parent households and in  foster care in each U.S state.

The Boys and Girls Club in Dalton say they help two thousand children in four counties every single year

Robbie Slocumb, Boys and Girls Club,"You can’t move a ship by just a big jerk, you have to make sure that you move it slowly. I think we are making strides with what we’re doing locally, especially with our Boys and Girls Clubs in our four counties as well as what we’re doing with our local communities. We currently have a 3.3 GPA with our club kids".

The Salvation Army added they are not surprised Georgia ranked so low but are actively addressing the underprivileged child crisis.

Major Art  Fultz, Salvation Army Dalton,"They are neighborhood kids, they’re not all disadvantaged but there are those from families that otherwise might fall through the cracks. Children of some homeless families as well. We have on this campus some transitional housing".

Dalton State’s Sharon Hixson is part of a coalition aiming to boost literacy levels amongst some of Georgia’s poorest schools.

Dalton State Dean of Education Sharon Hixson, "Better chance for success in school if you are on grade level at third grade and so that means a higher graduation rate. More school and more people graduating would mean that in the end we would have a lower poverty rate".

The research ranked Alabama 43rd worst in the nation with Tennessee doing just slightly better.
