Germs in the Classroom: How to Stay Healthy This Fall

Chattanooga, TN (WDEF)- As kids head back to school, they’re bringing more than just new backpacks and sharpened pencils. Health experts warn that the start of the school year often ushers in what’s known as the “back-to-school crud” — a wave of coughs, colds, and even flu-like symptoms that sweep through classrooms during the first few weeks.

With students spending hours in close quarters, germs spread quickly. Retired school nurse Janet Finkel says the best defense is simple hygiene.

“Hand washing is very important. It’s the number one step in preventing illness,” Finkel explained. “If a child has a cough — and many do — it’s important to teach them to cough or sneeze into the inside of their elbow if a tissue isn’t handy. We call it the ‘vampire cough.’ It’s much better than using your hand or coughing into the air.”

Health experts say these small steps — combined with staying home when sick — can go a long way toward keeping both students and families healthier throughout the school year.
