CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) — One thousand people in the EPB service area will receive free trees or shrubs starting this Saturday.

EPB said that their customers are eligible to receive two native plants per home, while supplies last.

This “Spring Free Tree ReLeaf” event helps preserve Chattanooga’s ecology, reduce stormwater damage and plant trees in places that will prevent power outages, EPB explained.

The giveaway will take place at Reflection Riding Arboretum and Nature Center’s Native Plant Nursery. This is located at 400 Garden Road in Chattanooga.

It will begin on Saturday, March 23, and it will last until supplies run out. Reflection Riding is open Thursday through Saturday, from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.

EPB, Reflection Riding and the City of Chattanooga are making this event possible.

In order to receive a free plant, guests will have to provide their address to verify they live in EPB’s coverage area.

“Introducing native plants at home is a cost-effective and sustainable solution to support our environment,” said Mark McKnight, President and CEO of Reflection Riding. “Our Native Plant Nursery’s expertise will give customers confidence about plants that best suit their property so they can enjoy them for years to come.”

This event started following the Easter tornadoes of 2020. EPB joined in on the effort in 2022, expanding eligibility to their customers.

Organizers explained that planting species native to the area helps reduce stormwater runoff and helps the ecosystem thrive. Adding more trees can reduce flood risks, protect water quality and improve air quality.

This also helps support wildlife, birds and insects like butterflies.

Additionally, native plants require less maintenance and water.
