Golden Apple Award: Glenda Broom, Fairyland Elementary

LOOKOUT MOUTAIN, Ga. (WDEF) – Think back about your favorite elementary school teacher. Odds are, she (or he) was caring, helpful and fun. Glenda Broom has all those qualities and many more. We pay a visit to Fairyland Elementary for this week’s Golden Apple Award.

Troy Green is the Assistant Principal at Fairyland.

He says, “Oh, Miss Broom is a wonderful person. She is an excellent teacher. She is a bright light in this world. Miss Broom loves and cares for every student that she comes in contact with. Has a constant smile on her face. Is just so positive around these kids. She wants to inspire them to be the best they can be.”

When asked to describe herself, Ms. Broom says, “Glenda Broom is a mom, a teacher, a grandma. I’m a Christian, so I was a parent and then I was a bus driver here, and then I was a substitute, and I was a teacher, an RTI teacher. That’s when I went and got my degree to teach. And this is my 7th year as the fifth-grade teacher here at Fairyland.”

Damon Raines is the Superintendent of Walker County Schools.

He says,” We have fantastic teachers here at Fairland. They’re amazing. They’re doing this every single day. And this teacher just exemplifies that as well. And so, we’re so proud of her. Always love to see you guys come around and highlight that. And we love News Channel Twelve for doing that.”

Ms. Broom concludes, “I love what I do. I love where I am. I’m just very blessed. I love to see the light bulb go on the a-ha moment. That a-ha moment when kids finally get it, they get it. Maybe, I’m where I need to be. Maybe that all of life’s experiences and not all of them (are) easy, but they’ve gotten me to this point. And that if I can just share a little bit with these kids to help them make better choices, to save them a few hard knocks in life, if I can just let them know they’re loved and that they’re worthy, they’re worth it and they matter, then what I do, it’s worth it.”
