Golden Apple Award: Kathlina Alford, Hixson High School
CHATTANOOGA, TN (WDEF) – Kathlina Alford spends every school day making sure that students at Hixson High School get all the support they need to succeed. From her Biology classroom to the lunchroom students know they can always turn to her for help. That kind of dedication earned Ms. Alford this week’s Golden Apple Award.
She’s very inclusive. She supports all and she really brings the mission, the Hixon High School mission to life,” Shunta Daniels, Assistant Principal at Hixson High School said.
“Who am I? Well, so I am a teacher and a mom and um a wife. Uh, I live in Red Bank and um I’m just a part of this community. Like the reason that I’m a teacher is to just be more involved in my community. This is my ninth year in the classroom and because I work with sophomores, juniors, and seniors, I get kind of really invested in their lives and you really get to know them over those three years and um try to keep up with them after the fact. Uh you know, because once they graduate sometimes they can just disappear, but there’s a lot of kids that that I try to keep up with from my experiences over the years,” Kathlina Alford, Biology Teacher, Hixson High School said.
“She really like encourage us to do our work and stuff like that. And she just motivates us to get our work done,” Nevaughn Bridges, Sophomore at Hixson High School said.
“She like goes over work really good and like she’s like helps you understand it and like goes through it really well,” Asher Franks, Sophomore at Hixson High School said.
“Miss Alfred’s a really good teacher and like she’s really like if you need somebody to go to, she’s a good type of teacher for that,” Isaac Shirley, Sophomore at Hixson High School said.
“I used to struggle in school real bad and then I came to this class and it like it just made my, my science grades go up just because she like helps you through everything,” Nolan West, Sophomore at Hixson High School said.
“Well, I think I would have to echo what Miss Daniels said is this is a person that goes above and beyond the classroom, cares and loves for loves all kids, wants to make sure that they’re taken care of, puts her time and energy into everything she does,” Daniel Lunt, Sophomore at Hixson High School said.
“I’m here because I want to be. And so, that’s I think that’s important for them to know that I’m not here because I’m stuck here and I can’t do anything else. I’m here because I really want to be and I enjoy being um part of their lives,” Alford said.
