Golden Apple Award: Katy Vaughn, Davis Elementary
TRENTON, GA (WDEF) – Positivity can be contagious. That’s one of the lessons that Katy Vaughn passes on to her young students at Davis Elementary. They love her for it.
Charity Barton is the Principal at Davis Elementary School.
Charity says, “So many wonderful things to say about Miss Katy. She’s creative. She’s fun. You know the root of all good teaching is making it fun for our students, and she does that. Kids get to socialize, and she interacts with them regularly. Parents love her because she’s an excellent communicator. We just can’t say enough good things about Miss Katy and and all that she brings to our entire school not just her classroom, but she’s a wonderful colleague as well.”
Katy explains, “They call me Miss Katy. Who is Katy Vaughn? Oh, wow kind of a loaded question isn’t it! Um, well I am a pre-k teacher at Davis Elementary. I have been in pre-k for 12 years, and I absolutely love it. I originally thought I wanted first or second grade and then I was placed into pre-k, and fell in love.”
She continues, “I came to Davis to do my student teaching, and when I was here I loved the small school feeling; everybody knew each other it was like, it was just like family, and it was like home, and you can walk through the school and you know every student and every student knows you, and so I just absolutely love it. I think I was destined to be, I think the Lord decided what I was going to be. I fought it for a long time because my mother was a teacher, and her mother was a principal in Gadsden Alabama. It’s in my blood, and my grandfather was a teacher as well.
She concludes, “I love it. I love teaching. I love um, you hear teachers all the time say that they they work for that smile, that spark. When the kids start to get it, and if there’s anything I can do to make it fun for them so that they’re excited about their learning. That just makes it even better for me.”
