Golden Apple Award: Lindsey Flaherty, Allen Elementary

SODDY DAISY, TN (WDEF) – For the best educators, teaching is much more than a job. It’s a passion. That’s certainly true for Lindsey Flaherty. One Allen Elementary school parent describes her as the “Light of the third grade.” Let’s get illuminated in this week’s Golden Apple.

“Ms Flaherty is an amazing teacher. She is, she always has a smile. She greets her children first thing in the morning. Makes them happy to be at school. Let them know that she’s happy to have them at school. She works so hard to bring learning to her students in such a fun and engaging way,” Haley Brown, Principal, Allen Elementary School said.

“Who is Lindsay Flaherty?” David Moore, Chief Photographer at News 12 asked.

“I am a 33 year old and I have three dogs. I love teaching. It’s my eighth year of teaching,” Lindsey Flaherty said.

“I like to put a lot into my classroom and my lessons. I want them to be fun and exciting for the kiddos. I want them to learn coming to school. And I’m just an excited little person,” Flaherty said.

“What do you like best, about being in Ms. Flaherty’s room?” Moore asked.

“How nice Miss Flaherty is and she always has such fun subjects to do,” Jaxson Neighbors, 3rd Grader, Allen Elementary School said.

“Ms. Flaherty is nice. She’s funny, she’s loving and she’s kind to us students,” Barker Lotspeich, 3rd Grader, Allen Elementary School said.

“She just the best teacher and she teach us a lot of stuff. And she encourages us. And, I love multiplying with her,” Adley Williams, 3rd grader, Allen Elementary School said.

Flaherty continues, “Well, when I was a little girl, we had a playroom and I always made my younger sisters be the student. I’m not sure if they loved it as much as I did. But we would play school. And then actually I went to college and I was a nursing major but I got a school a job in a school that works with my schedule. And I loved it so much. I said I have to switch. I have to go with the teaching that’s my passion. But I had a favorite teacher, my first grade teacher, and her name was Miss Rhodes. And she’s actually teachers at the school, but she made a huge impact in my life. And I just wanted to also impact student that way she impacted me to make a difference and that, yeah! That’s where I am.”

“There are lots of days that I get pictures from her teammates of her classroom that she has transformed into a bakery,” Brown said.

“We also did, last year we did a medical fraction center. And we hung ah… balloons up from the top. And so we section off some areas. And we learned some  fractions that way. And the kids scrubbed in, they had the mask. They had a hats the whole little scrub, the glove is very cute. Learning is fine. Learning is fine  It’s a lifetime journey. It’s not just a third grade journey, it’s forever; even I am still learning and I hope that they remember that,” Flaherty said.
