Golden Apple Award: McKenzie Hutcherson, Lookout Valley Middle High
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – There is an old adage that great things come to those who wait. McKenzie Hutcherson might be the exception to that rule. Although she is a new teacher at Lookout Valley, she is already doing great things in the classroom.
Lee Ann McBryar is the Principal at Lookout Valley Middle High School.
She says, ” Ms. Hutch is a brand-new hire this year. So, we hired her as a brand-new baby teacher, and she stood out amongst all of the candidates that we had, and I’m so thrilled to have her here.”
When asked about herself McKenzie says, “I’m married. I have a dog. But that’s about it. I bake, I cook. But that’s pretty much all I do at home. I wish I had more time to paint. I am a seventh-grade social studies, teacher and an eighth grade ELA teacher at Lookout Valley Middle High school, so yeah, I absolutely love it. I’m a first-year teacher. I love you guys too.”
7th grader Harlow Jacobs says,” Miss Hutch is an important person at the school. She always cares about her students and no matter what she’s going through. She’ll make sure we’re taken care of.”
7th grader Jaylynn Newsome adds, “She always brings her really positive energy into the classroom when teaching and she’s very understanding, when we do have problems in the class. ”
Ms. Hutcherson says, ” The relationship that I have built with something that I could never get anywhere else. And I am fulfilled with coming to work every day, knowing that I see your face every single day. It just gives me something to look forward to.”
7th grader Zahra Abdulameer says, “Whenever we have a problem she talks about it. She’s very important person to me in this school. ”
We asked 7th grader Jayda Carrick, “Where would you be without Ms. Hutch?”
She responded, “Probably in my bed crying. Because I come to her with all my problems.”
Ms. Hutcherson says, “I think my age gives me a good opportunity to get to know these kids on more of a personal level. Because I remember having the older teachers that I obviously respected but having the younger teachers that I felt comfortable talking to about everything ah, was really helpful for me. ”
7th grader Kenny Nguyen chips in, “She’s a good teacher because whenever we have difficulties understanding problems, she helps us understand them.”
Ms. Hutcherson concludes, “Honestly, all of the hardest teachers that I ever had growing up were my favorite. The teachers that always push me and I always complained about ended up being my favorites because I got the most out of their classes. I love my position here and I don’t think I could’ve been anywhere else for my first year.”
