Golden Apple Award: Myra Cook, Oakwood Christian Academy
CHICKAMAUGA, GA (WDEF) – Myra Cook is an institution at Oakwood Christian Academy. She’s been there for more than 25 years. As a music teacher, she inspired countless kids to find their talents and take the stage. That earned her this week’s Golden Apple Award.
“She has been at OCA for 27 years this year. And she’s taught kindergarten through 12th grade. She has been the heart of our fine arts program. Um I know for Mrs. Cook that her heart is for her students to love Jesus and to become citizens that are well-rounded through music. And we appreciate her greatly,” Trina Cook, 2-6 Principal, Oakwood Academy said.
“I am a mother of three. I have uh three grown children and one grandson that are very precious to me. Um I’ve been a single mom uh for half of my life. Um and I am a daughter of the Lord Jesus Christ who is my everything,” Myra Cook, Fine Arts Coordinator, Oakwood Academy, said.
Myra Cook continued, “God called me to this position at a very difficult time in my life. The Lord just opened the door. Um and Mr. Palmer, who was our administrator at the time, hired me to work in what we call afterare. And then he said, “I want you to teach. I think you would be really great at teaching.” Here at Oakwood, our u entity is u uniting a passion for Christ with excellence in academics and that includes fine arts. Uh and there’s such a need for that um when children don’t really fit into an entity of sports or academics. Sometimes their outlet is fine arts.”
