Golden Apple Award: Susan Glasheen, George R. Stuart Elementary School

CLEVELAND, TN (WDEF) – The best teachers truly care about their students. That certainly describes Susan Glasheen. Her classroom at George R. Stuart Elementary in Cleveland is a very welcoming place. Students love her. Parents love her. That earned Ms. Glasheen this week’s Golden Apple Award.

“You know she is a teacher who cares deeply for students.  It comes out every day in the work that she does with them here.  She is very patient.  She has very high expectations and she’s loved among her parents, and also, the faculty here at Stuart,” said Kim Bradford, the principal at George R. Stuart Elementary School.

When asked to describe herself, Ms. Glasheen says, “Who am I?  I am a teacher.  I am a camp director.  I do everything that has to do with kids.  I was, I worked at a resident Camp from time I was in high school.  And I liked it so much that I just thought that teaching was the right thing to do.”

She continues, “I just love kids. just watching them grow, do new things, trying to find a way to do hard things and make them easier.  I have a lot of children that struggle with behavior.  And when you see them do something great and you see them do it right, it’s like you cheer with them.  Because they’re doing such a great job and it’s so hard for them. They, it becomes easy.”

“Miss Glashen is just one of our star teachers.  She really believes in her students.  She pushes them outside of their comfort zone.  And she really believes in them.  She brings parents in and just really shares with them what their students are doing.   And just has so much confidence in her students.  And we know that each and every day she’s going to be here and go above and beyond.  And she is more than deserving for this award,” said Mindy Kiser, the assistant principal at George R. Stuart Elementary School.

She continues, “And we are so glad that you know she is ours.  We wouldn’t trade her for anybody in the world.  Miss Glashen is here early, and she stays late. And we just love the hard work that she puts in, but also her students and again her families are just so blessed by her each and every day.”

Ms. Glasheen concludes, “These kids are everything.  So, we have our rough days, and we have our great days.  But we have many more wins than we do losses.  That’s the best thing for these kids ever.  These kids are going to go far in life I promise you.”
