Golden Apple Award: Wesley Greer, Signal Moutain High School

SIGNAL MOUTAIN, Tenn. (WDEF) – Learning a new language can be challenging, especially when that language is German. Wesley Greer uses positive reinforcement to make learning fun. That earned him this week’s Goldener Apfel award.

Michael Carson is the Principal at Signal Mountain High.

He says, “Mr. Greer is an amazing teacher. We are just completely overjoyed to have him in our building. He is someone who is always willing to say yes with anything that we need, anything that’s a volunteer sort of thing. But more than anything, he develops relationships with the students, both in his classroom and out.”

When asked to describe himself, Mr. Greer says, “Wesley Greer has had a blessed life. It seems like you get taken from one glory to the next with God, home life, married with beautiful wife Patricia. My gosh, we’ve been married 25 years. It’s probably the boldest prayer request I’ve ever had answered by God. So, I’m grateful for her. We’ve got children. They’re adults now, and they’re all having successful lives now. I’m getting to serve in the classroom with the best school in the county, with the best students, the best administrators, the best teachers and peers. It’s truly a teamwork.”

9th grader Alyssa Bosher says, “It’s very, very wonderful. I’ve learned a lot throughout my years of being here, and all in all, it’s just great.”

9th grader Adam Shanda adds, “I love Mr. Greer. He’s like one of the best teachers I ever had, and I don’t know what else to say. I like how he served in the military. That’s really inspiring.”

9th grader Zander Moody chips in, “Being in Mr. Greer’s class is pretty good. We learn a lot of German in here every day. We do work, we work together. But the thing that I’ve learned a lot of German from him, but he’s also taught me a lot about being a classy dude.”

9th grader Dane McMillan says, “There’s a lot of stuff that we learned. We learned about different German traditions, such as cutting off your tie and stuff. And we do a lot of stuff like we do karaoke.”

9th grader Carson Howell adds, “It’s really fun, and we learn a bunch. And he’s a really nice guy, and he’s super humble.”

Mr. Greer remembers, “I had a great German teacher in high school, Miss Brackett. Absolutely loved the subject, loved her as a teacher. And so, I’m honored to maybe follow in those footsteps somewhat.”

He concludes, “Well, the main thing, I think, is if they’ll just remember that maybe the most important thing is not German, but relationships that you establish among your classmates with friends and peers, and as you go into the professional world, the contacts and relationships you establish with your coworkers.”
