Gordon Lee Baseball Team Shows ‘No Flinch’ in Reaching State Championship Game

Chickamauga, GA-(WDEF) The Gordon Lee baseball team beat Charlton County last week to advance to the Class A state championship game.
The Trojans will be seeking their first state crown since 1984 when they take on Schley County on Thursday in a minor league ballpark.
Gordon Lee got a big confidence boost to start the season when they went to Athens and swept two tough teams in Benedictine and North Oconee.
Said pitcher Ethan Clark:”Coach told us after that. He said it would have been good to split. Benedictine had a horse on the mound in Kumar Rocker, he’s the number one pitcher in the nation as like a junior. We were just hoping to maybe steal one, but we went and swept.”
The good vibes were later tempered a bit when pitcher Chaney Rogers was lost for the year with a bad elbow. Rogers is a University of Georgia signee.
Said head coach Mike Dunfee:”I hated it for him. He struggled with it. Still struggling with it now, but he has been a big part rooting on his teammates.”
Said catcher Dylan Minghini:”We were confident that we were going to have somebody step up. We’re 19 deep. Everybody can contribute. We were confident everybody that everybody can make plays.”
Coach Dunfee admired his team’s focus despite losing one of their top players.
Said Dunfee:”No flinch. Just like you said earlier about the injury. No flinch. Next guy up. You come to Charlton. You don’t play good early. Some things don’t go your way. No flinch. Keep playing. And they’ve done that all year long.”
Now the Trojans will get to play for the Class A title in the stadium for the Rome Braves.
Said Minghini:”Rome. The facilities will be top notch. We played there against Darlington earlier in the year. It was really nice.”
Reporter:”What about the fences? Do they bring them in?”
Said Dunfee:”No. It’s going to be their park. That’s another challenge or adversity you are going to face. If you’re a team that hits the long ball, and you go there. Well, it kind of takes that away from you a little bit.”
Game one against Schley Co is set for 11am on Thursday in the best of three series.
