Gov. Deal wants lawmakers to address exceptions to new guns on college campus bill
ATLANTA (AP) – Gov. Nathan Deal says he wants Georgia lawmakers to pass legislation addressing concerns about a bill lifting the weapons ban on the state’s public college campuses.
Deal’s office issued the statement Monday.
Deal, a Republican, says lawmakers should address concerns about K-12 students who may take classes on college campuses and day care centers on campuses.
He also wants higher education officials to be able to set their own rules about firearms at disciplinary hearings and inside faculty or administrative offices.
The state Senate on Friday sent a bill to Deal’s desk allowing licensed gun owners who are 21 and older to carry concealed weapons on public college campuses. Athletic facilities and student housing, including fraternity and sorority houses are exempt.
