Governor Bill Haslam Discusses Manufacturing in the TN Valley
However, there is one concern discussed frequently in the manufacturing community.
Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam, says, "If you talk to our manufacturers, I think they would say they love everything about Tennessee, but we’re concerned about the talents that’s here long term. "
That’s partly because of the adults in Tennessee, only about 32 percent have a two-year degree or more.
The skill set needed now in 2014 has also changed drastically over the years.
Paul Loftin, President of Siskin Steel, says, "It’s taking a different individual to fill those jobs. So, his initiative to make certain that people in Tennessee, particularly the first two years to college, is paid for, is just outstanding. That is just going to benefit manufacturing in so many ways."
Loftin is talking about Governor Bill Haslam’s Tennessee Promise.
He’s promising any high school graduate two free years of community college or technical school and a mentor.
Loftin adds, "If the governor and the state of Tennessee was not taking these steps, yes, the possibility is that you have to go outside to fill those positions."
43,000 students have already signed for the Tennessee Promise.
That’s double than what was expected.
Governor Haslam adds, "We think that’s really good news and bodes really well for the future of Tennessee."
