Governor Lee Stops in Athens and Decatur
MEIGS AND MCMINN COUNTY, Tenn. (WDEF) – Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee made two stops in East Tennessee on Wednesday as part of his statewide farewell tour, drawing crowds of supporters in one community and protesters in another.
Lee first visited the Meigs County Courthouse in Decatur, where residents gathered for a chance to greet the governor as he continues traveling across Tennessee before leaving office.
People lined up outside the courthouse, taking photos and briefly speaking with Lee during the visit.
The governor has been making stops across the state as part of an effort to visit all 95 counties before the end of his term.
Later Wednesday, Lee made his way to Mayfield Dairy in Athens, where the reception outside the event looked different.
Supporters were joined by demonstrators holding signs and raising concerns about immigration enforcement and school voucher policies.
The protest created a more tense atmosphere surrounding the governor’s visit compared to the earlier stop in Meigs County.
Both appearances were held as part of America 250 commemorations taking place across the state.
The events are aimed at highlighting Tennessee’s role in the nation’s history as the country approaches its 250th anniversary.
Lee is expected to continue making stops in communities across Tennessee in the weeks ahead.
