Growing the economy through agriculture industry

ROCK SPRING, Ga. (WDEF) — With new technologies and local support, Georgia is advancing in helping the agriculture industry.

“Agriculture is more than cows, plows, and sows. I think when most people think about agriculture, that’s what they think of,” 17th Agriculture Commissioner, Ga. Tyler Harper said.

The Walker County Civic Center held an event to invite local farmers and business owners to get the latest updates on the future of agriculture.

“What I tell folks is summed up in one sentence. It’s leveling the playing field. If we can level the playing field for Georgia agriculture, for American agriculture, we can allow us to succeed. Why is that important? Well, it’s important because agriculture is national security period,” Harper said.

The Georgia Grown program has products all across the state that are locally produced.

Taking the time to invest in local produce helps grow the economy… quite literally.

Peanuts, peaches, and poultry are just some of the leading products in the state.

Commissioner Harper looks to invest in the agriculture industry to allow it to continue to grow the economy.

“He brought up some excellent points today, we need our ag from our home state. And we need to be able to export and help Georgia farmers,” Walker Chamber of Commerce member Don Stultz said.

With the future of agriculture looking bright, state officials encourage consumers to get involved and support the industry.

“People that are willing to get involved in agriculture, and investing in that new generation, is an important part of the future,” Harper said.

The hope is that upcoming generations will get involved and take part in growing the economy.
