Grundy Co Baseball Beats Signal Mountain 5-3 to Advance to Spring Fling

Signal Mountain, TN-(WDEF-TV) Grundy County beat Signal Mountain 5-3 on Friday night to punch their ticket to Spring Fling next week in Murfreesboro. The Yellow Jackets carried a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the 5th when the Eagles rallied to tie the game. Scott Payne had an RBI double to left to make it 3-1. Next batter was Landon Edwards, and he collected an RBI single past short to make it 3-2. The Eagles added another run on a Collin Farr sac fly RBI to tie the game. The Yellow Jackets regained the advantage in the top of the 6th. Blane Harris hit a come-backer to the mound that was too hot to handle for pitcher Dominic Guagenti. That allowed Jacob Thomas to score from third to make it 4-3. Grundy Co added another run on a walk to make it 5-3. The Yellow Jackets were looking to extend that lead in the top of the seventh, but they had three runners thrown out at the plate in the inning.

Eagles pitcher Drew Lowery bare handed a bunt from Jacob Thomas and fired to catcher Carter Cannon who tagged out Trey Hampton trying to score from third. Later in the inning and Lowery threw a wild pitch, but Cannon chased the ball down and fired to Lowery covering home plate to tag out another runner. In the aftermath, Jacob Thomas tried to sneak home as well, but he was tagged out by Cannon.

The Eagles got two runners on base in the bottom of the seventh, but they couldn’t get them home as Grundy Co held on for the 5-3 win.
