Hamilton County District Attorney Speaks Out After Pressing Charges Thursday
And he spoke out for the first time Friday.
Pinkston says the athletic director and two coaches broke the law by never reporting to authorities the sexual assaults involving their players.
Pinkston confirms 4 students were sexually assaulted with a pool stick and one suffered life-threatening injuries requiring extensive surgery.
It is a crime in Tennessee to not report child abuse or child sexual abuse if you knew it took place.
"There are two different statutes that require mandatory reporting if you become aware of those things," Pinkston said.
But who exactly were they supposed to contact?
"The juvenile court where the child resides, the D.C.S where the child resides, the sheriff where the child resides or the police chief where the child resides. It’s ‘or’, ‘either or’. Not all four. It can be any of those," he said.
An investigator with the D.A.’s office and a detective with the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office conducted the investigations that lead to the charges.
In lieu of arrest, those charged must appear at court on Thursday January 21st.
"The current investigation revealed that the facts that were contained in the complaint filed in juvenile court and a request for charges was made and the court granted that and issued summons for the three individuals to appear in juvenile court next Thursday," Pinkston said.
A press release from the D.A. says after allegations of "an ingrained culture of violence", the investigation has extended into the football team reaching several years back.
