Hamilton County Health Department offering back to school shots

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF)- The Hamilton County Health Department is encouraging back to school immunizations.

This is to ensure children are up-to-date with their shots.

“Remember children are going to be together on the bus, the playground, and in the classrooms. It is a chance or an opportunity to spread different infectious diseases.  These vaccinations will help protect them against that.” said Hamilton County Health Department’s Health Officer, Dr. Stephen Miller

Children entering kindergarten and seventh grade at Tennessee public schools are due for a new round of vaccines.

Immunization requirements for college entry can vary by institution.

“If your child is going into college, you are going to need to find out if either flu or COVID vaccinations are required, said Miller.”Make sure their meningitis shots are up to date, especially if they are going to be staying in dormitories.”

The health departments on Third Street and at Birchwood are offering back-to-school shots.

Children can get their shots Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., with no appointment required.

Doctor Miller says getting these vaccines are the easiest way for a child to have a safe and healthy school year, AND protect them from diseases.

“It is important that we maintain a steadfast adherence to getting these immunizations. We do not want to see a return of things like polio and measles in this country,” said Miller. “We already see little bits and pockets of things like measles and rubella, but we need to keep these diseases at bay. They can do a lot of harm to our children and our unborn children as well as our adults in our geriatric population.”

The 2023-2024 school season starts back next month.
