Hamilton County launches career and technical education council

CHATTANOOGA. Tenn. (WDEF)- A new council will guide the future of technical education across Hamilton County.

Mayor Weston Wamp’s office announced the creation of The Council on Career and Technical Education.

It is an advisory body of industry and other local leaders to shape all technical and Future Ready Institutes.

Mayor Wamp says now is the time to bring in the community to build vocational training as capacity expands with the future Gateway School in addition to expansions at Harrison Bay and Sequoyah.

He says the concept of vocational training is evolving.

Mayor Wamp said, “Do something with our hands, learn how to make stuff, and that might look different in terms of IT, maybe a software company, and so we’re looking towards the future as it comes to career and technical, but we don’t want to assume that all of us in government have all the answers, so that’s why we’ve created this council, bringing the best minds of career and technical together.”

There are 11 people on that board, and they say their main initial focus will be getting the Gateway School in operation.
