Hamilton County Reacts to Trump’s Win

HAMILTON COUNTY, Tenn. (WDEF)- It was just a few hours ago that Donald Trump was announced as the President-Elect of the United States.
Now the world and people in our community are speaking out about the what’s being called an unexpected “upset.”
News 12 spoke with some of those people about their fears, hopes, and why Trump may be the best person for the job.

People in Hamilton County are feeling a wave of emotions after a suspenseful election night.

“It’s hopeless we’ve elected Donald Trump for President”, said John Reis.

“I’m excited because our country is in bad shape and I think he is going to go in and there and do his very best”, said Joanne Rock.

According to CBS News, Trump won 289 electoral votes compared to Hillary Clinton’s 218.

“Hillary didn’t have as much charisma or attention to the younger generation”, said UTC student Eric Williams.

While Clinton won 88% of the black vote compared to Trump’s 8% that was still not  as strong of a turn out as there was for President Obama 8 years ago.

“I think a lot of African American feel defeated in this country. So at this point they’re tired voicing those opinions, they’re tired of protesting, they’re just tired of trying”, said UTC student Jaleesa Monroe.

While there may be some anguish about Trump taking office come this January there is some optimism.

“He could honestly get in there and shock us and do a very wonderful job”, said Monroe.

“I won’t know that until the next 6 months. I have a negative feeling about it, but we’ll see in the next six months. It will truly tell the story”, said John Hereford.
