Hamilton County school bus driver indicted on child abuse charges

HAMILTON COUNTY, Tenn. (WDEF) —  A Hamilton County school bus driver has been indicted on over a dozen charges, including child abuse.

These charges are related to an incident that occurred more than a month ago.

Brandy Renee Smith was suspended as a driver after the county received complaints from parents that she slammed on the brakes and injured students.

A grand jury has now indicted her on the following charges:

  • Child Abuse (4 counts)
  • Reckless Endangerment (9 counts)
  • Reckless Driving

The indictment we received lists the victims under the age of 8 years old.

A similar incident to Smith’s occurred in Walker County, Georgia last week.

Officials from Walker County say a school bus driver at Ridgeland High School hit the brakes due to a disruption on the bus.

The school system is investigating this incident to determine if any students were injured.
