Hamilton County Schools score proficient on TCAP

CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – Hamilton County students scored at or above statewide proficiency levels in more than 64% of tested areas during the 2021-22 school year.

That’s according to the standardized T-CAP test results that were released by the Tennessee Department of Education Wednesday morning.

Hamilton County Communications Officer Steve Doremus said considering the challenges of the last two years, the Department of Education is impressed with the student’s comeback.

“So some subjects are are more affected by the challenges we faced than others. Math, for instance, we’re looking forward to engaging our community over the next year to find a new math curriculum, just like we did for English language arts two years ago. We want to find something that’s high quality to support our students and our teachers,” said Doremus. ” Students and teachers have been through challenges of the pandemic the last two years, and our students continue to make gains and show improvement as they achieve. Our teachers, who are supporting them in the classrooms, again, have fought through many challenges to make sure they’re providing the instruction needed for our students to reach their potential and basically thrive and achieve their expectations.”

The rebound in 4th and 5th grade Math proficiency rebounded back to 2018’s baseline results after a year of decline.

Two areas of significant gains in the data released today include English and Language Arts and Social Studies, where
local students posted their highest proficiency levels since the District developed its Future Ready 2023 strategic plan in 2018. Students in the 6th and 7th grades saw the greatest increase, with a nearly 10% gain in each grade level.
