Hard to Defend Mocs Jada Guinn
Chattanooga-(WDEF-TV) The three-pointer may rule in college basketball, but Mocs guard Jada Guinn can beat you the old fashion way. Hard drives and mid-range jumpers.
Guinn has been tough to defend ever since she arrived at UTC this season, as a grad transfer from Tennessee Tech.
When you’re a good player like Jada Guinn, and you put your name in the transfer portal, coaches respond faster than a game show contestant hitting their buzzer.
Said Guinn:”Like literally as soon as I walked downstairs and walked out the door a coach ended up calling me. It was crazy. I was like dang I didn’t know it worked that fast. Yeah.”
Mocs coach Shawn Poppie was certainly excited to swoop up the reigning OVC tournament MVP.
Said Poppie:”She has probably been better than advertised for us. She scores the ball so, so well. Leads us in assists.”
Said Guinn:”My role here has changed. At Tech I was more of a point guard. Here I’ve been more of a scoring guard.”
The position change has paid off. Guinn is the second leading scorer in the SoCon, averaging nearly 19 points a game.
Said Mocs guard Addie Grace Porter:”She’s just able to get downhill to the free throw line a lot. Just the three maybe one a game just to keep’em honest you know. People honestly can’t hold her off the bounce.”
Said Poppie:”I tell you what. She has great balance. She can land on two. Up and under. Kind of twist back and forth. It really keeps you off-balance. Very, very shifty.”
In the Mocs game last Saturday against Western Carolina, Guinn torched the Catamounts for 30 points.
Said Guinn:”So it was funny. So the crowd actually, there were some alumni from Western Carolina. They were talking to me the whole game. They were like you need to get thirty, so I kind of knew. I also knew I was more aggressive more typically than usual.”
Said Poppie:”14 of 20 from the floor is pretty darn efficient. That sounds like a post player that’s within two feet of the rim.”
When you’re having fun like Guinn, it’s hard to stop smiling.
Said Guinn:”I literally love playing on this team.”
