HCSD literacy emphasis

CHATTANOOGA, Tennessee (WDEF)-Hamilton County School District is a read 360 school system. This means, there is an extra emphasis on kids achieving their reading at their grade level or better.

“So this is a reading 360 district. That means Hamilton county has done exceptional work to make sure all their students are on track to reading on grade level by third grade. We just ended literacy month and it’s just been so wonderful to see so many districts working to make sure every child is reading and the excitement is just wonderful and he saw that today,” said  Schwinn.
Commissioner of education, Penny Schwinn, visited Battle Academy to see the kids reading growth and speak on why literacy is fundamentally important for children’s education.
“Last week we saw students are really diving into reading and writing here today in Chattanooga and that’s what the southeast is doing. They are showing what’s possible, proving what’s possible and doing really exceptional work for kids. So it’s been a wonderful two-day stretch,” said  Schwinn.
This trip over the past two days has allowed Schwinn to gain personal insight into how public schools in Hamilton County and Bradley County are doing.
“What exceptional work our public schools are doing. Amazing CTE programs, and exceptional literacy work we saw celebrations of Jackie Robinson with ice cream, with all literacy and robotics,” said  Schwinn.
