Head of the Hooch Regatta

"My thighs are destroyed. They feel like jelly right now."

It was a busy and exhausting day out of the water. Despite the wet weather these rowers and spectators were prepared.

Ryan Worth, Assistant Coach at Steson University said, "This weather’s for the ducks…it’s wonderful."

The Head of the Hooch is second largest Regatta in the country and it’s been taking place right here in Chattanooga for the past eleven years.

"You might know it, it’s called the head of the Chattaoochie Regatta…even though we’re rowing on the Tennessee River so we’ve finally moved it to the Tennessee River just because we outgrew the other 2 venues."

But just what does it take to be a great rower?

I spoke with some of the competitors about what type of endurance someone needs to get out there and do this.

"It’s one of those unique sports where every muscle in your body is being worked out every single stroke."

"Aerobically it’s one of the more challenging and demanding sports there is. There’s also a high element of teamwork."

Each boat seats one to nine people. But the newest addition to the regatta is this a 24-person powered boat. The custom-made boat is making it’s appearance across the east coast.
