Heavy rains and flooding impacts parts of Chattanooga

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – As the rain came down Wednesday evening, some folks could be found at a shopping center near Brainerd Road.

“Just came out here for some shopping and checking out this side of town,” Patrick Goldberg said.

The rain caused some flood prone areas to retain water.

Road closed signs could be seen at a portion of Miller Drive and behind the signs water sat on the roadway.

“It’s up and down. The cold the rain, it’s just weird because it was warm two days ago,” Goldberg said.

While there has been some street flooding from flash floods, rivers and creeks will continue to rise.

Storm Team 12 Meteorologist Patrick Core said those may not crest until Thursday.

“Flash flooding occurs the quickest. it’s when you have a real have down pour in a quick amount of time and that’s when water has no place to go, and that’s what creates flash flooding. Creek and river flooding occurs when you’ve had steady or heavy rains for a period of time, and it takes between 18 and 24 hours for that water to rise and get over the banks.”

Because of the weather, Grundy County, and Dade County Schools will be on a two hour delay Thursday.
