Here’s How to Get Ready for Extreme Winter Weather
And, long-timers remember the blizzard of 1993.
Electricity was off for several days.
The Hamilton county Emergency Management Agency is ready with a set of valuable tips on how to prepare for the worst this winter and spring.
The Hamilton county emergency management agency has joined with EPB to talk about possible outages as winter approaches.
EPB says its Smart Grid has cut down on the number of extended power outages, but they can still happen, and residents are being urged to get ready now.
WENDELL BORING, EPB, ASST. VICE PRESIDENT "In the event of a major power emergency snow or ice event, be prepared to be in your home for two to three days because a lot of times you can’t even get out of the house ..so you have to make some preparations and being prepared in advance is key to what we’re trying to accomplish here."
Actually, preparing for extreme winter weather is not a simple matter.
Keeping an emergency kit stocked and ready is helpful, and thinking of little things like having cash on hand—the ATM’s may not work—and have something for kids to do.
And, don’t do foolish things.
WENDELL BORING "We’ve actually had people getting in there trying to cut the trees out of the power lines…they don’t klnow if those lines are en energized or not. So, no one should ever attempt to cut trees out of power lines."
And be careful using gasoline generators.
WENDELL BORING "Always make sure that generator is outside…not in the garage, not in the house …we’ve actually had people start them in the garage and get sick."
TONY REAVLEY, DIR. EMERGENCY SERVICES If they need to know what they need to have, they can refer to Emergency Services website..it’s Hamiltonready.org…we also have a facebook page, twitter. We try to put good information on those things as soon as we have confirmed information we can post on those sites."
The entire list of tips from EMA and EPB is posted here on our website.
