Heritage Receiver Luke Grant Uses ‘Guts and Grit’ to Become Scoring Machine

Ringgold, GA-(WDEF) Heritage receiver Luke Grant gives new meaning to ‘Magnificent Seven’ because he has scored a touchdown in seven different ways this season.
Kickoff return, punt return, fumble return, interception return to go along with a rushing and receiving touchdown.
And he even threw a touchdown pass.
Good luck keeping Luke Grant out of the end zone.
It seems he finds a way to score regardless of the position he’s playing.
Said head coach E.K. Slaughter:”We just kind of thought about it one day a couple of weeks ago. He’s scored five different ways. And then last week, he scoops and scores and throws a touchdown. That’s seven different ways. Next thing you know you start adding it up, and you’re like holy cow.”
Said Grant:”Actually this is the first time I have actually heard about it. I had no idea until we got to practice today.”(laughter)
Said Slaughter:”But if it’s not a state record, I’ll be surprised, especially for a single season.”
Said Grant:”I mean I guess it’s pretty odd, but when you have the talent we do on our team and the people who help me out. Doing that I guess makes it able for me to score in so many different ways I guess.”
Said Slaughter:”He’ll never get a blocked punt return for a touchdown because he’ll always be our return guy. So field goals he could possibly block a field goal, so there’s still a possibility of one.”
It’s hard to call Grant a secret weapon because opponents know what kind of weapon he is, especially on kick returns.
Said Slaughter:”Because you have to have courage to be a kickoff return guy. That’s what he’s got. He’ll hit it, and he’ll hit it fast. I think at one point I think it was mid-season, he was leading the country in kickoff return yards. It was like 37 yards per kickoff return. That was with quite a few opportunities. He just doesn’t have those opportunities anymore. They’ll kick it away from him. They’ll squib it.”
Grant’s skills are not limited to scoring touchdowns either.
Said Slaughter:”I think the week before I think he had ten tackles from corner. He’s not scared. He has got guts. He has got grit. He’s just the kind of kid you love to coach. One of the officials last week said number 10 is a baller. (chuckles) I was like that’s a pretty good way to describe him. He is. He’s just a little baller.”
