High School Students Build 30 Park Benches for Chattanooga Zoo and Public Spaces
High school juniors and seniors at the Construction Career Center have constructed 30 park benches for the Chattanooga Zoo and public spaces across Chattanooga.
With mentorship from Building Leaders of Construction, these students are learning the fundamentals of construction while leaving a lasting impact on their community.
“It’s really important, and I’m not sure the kids fully understand yet, but they might get to go to the zoo with their family and have that sense of pride—’Hey, I helped build that,’ or ‘My school built that,’ or ‘I was part of this.’ That’s a very rewarding part of construction: turning something into lumber that is now useful,” said Brad Laxton, instructor at the Construction Career Center.
This project is not only teaching students the fundamentals of construction but also helping improve public spaces throughout Chattanooga.
