High Water Levels in Chattooga County
Now Chattooga is waiting and hoping water levels don’t continue to rise.
Resident of Trion, Freddie Lee Christopher, said he’s seen the kind of terrible damage flood waters can bring.
"It’s a worry because all the people that live in that area. The water goes over there and it drowns them out."
Residents said the water level in Trion is typically about 5 feet, but residents estimate that it’s reached somewhere between 12 and 13 feet.
Christopher grew up in Trion and said the last time he saw water rise this high was in 2012.
"During the night the river crest, whenever the river crests, that’s when it builds up like this."
Alvin Grogan has lived in Trion since 1959 said he knows all too well what flooding can bring.
Grogan said he lost his home in 1990 when several feet of water crept into his home.
"Well we was up all night, watching the water, watching it rise and waiting to see if it come over the levee."
Christopher said there’s not much you can do about it, but just wait and hope it comes to a standstill.
"It’s going to happen, so you just have to deal with it. Hope God doesn’t send us anymore of it."
If you are driving in an area that has a road closure sign emergency officials advise for motorists to pay close attention them and they urge you NOT to try and go around them.
