Historic Fort Oglethorpe Home Up For Auction
FORT OGLETHORPE, Ga. (WDEF)- A historic home in Fort Oglethorpe is being auctioned off this evening.
The Band Barracks home at 309 Barnhardt Circle has been an AirBNB the past few years.
It was built in 1904 to accommodate 28 men when Barnhardt Circle used to be the 6th Calvary military post.
Historians say this building is a huge piece of Fort Oglethorpe’s history that not enough people know about.
Tom Bodkin, who is an Exhibits Assistant at the Fort Oglethorpe Welcome Center said of its creation, “The United States was pressed with an issue at the outbreak of the Spanish-American war in 1898. The issue was that our country did not have a large standing army. Hadn’t had one in any of the decades after the Civil War.”
Among notable people who have lived there, former five star general and President Dwight D. Eisenhower was an instructor there for a few months during World War I.
The city of Fort Oglethorpe has opened a welcome center at Barnhardt Circle and are in the process of building new exhibits there.
