Historic Neighborhoods Get Funding for Guideline Updates

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF)- Four historic Chattanooga neighborhoods will see funding for a new planning project.

These are Fort Wood, Saint Elmo, Battery Place, and Ferger Place.

The Tennessee Historic Planning Commission has given the city of Chattanooga $70,000 to help update their historic neighborhood guidelines.

These updates are designed to keep building exteriors consistent in an area, which applies to any new construction.

Melissa Mortimer, the historic preservation planner for the city of Chattanooga’s Land Development Office said, “Historic guidelines in historic districts really help to maintain the character, feeling, and historic integrity that these neighborhoods have. It’s why people are driven to these neighborhoods, why they want to live there.”

$40,000 was given to Rhea County to help preservation efforts at their courthouse.

Over one million dollars was given out in this project across the state.
