Homeless camp, several acres catch fire along Market Street Tuesday

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) — A fire broke out at a homeless camp along Market Street on Tuesday night, which caused the road to be shut down.

The Chattanooga Fire Department (CFD) responded to the call around 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday. They had the fire out and the street reopened by about 9:02 p.m.

They said several acres were burning in the 2900 block of Market Street.

This area included a homeless camp on fire. However, firefighters said no one was injured, and they did not find anyone in this encampment.

CFD said the fire occurred in one of the busiest parts of the city. Firefighters could see a column of smoke from the fire as they approached it.

Chattanooga Police closed the road and assisted with traffic while CFD fought the fire. This did cause some traffic issues, according to the fire department.

They attacked the fire from all angles, including aerial. They had to temporarily stop railroad traffic as well.

Firefighters said the fire was about 30 yards away from a bridge, and the bridge did not sustain any damage.

CFD did not say what caused the fire.
