Hooker Road homicide suspect convicted of murder
Marcus Birt, 32, of Chattanooga pled guilty to a second degree murder charge.
Judge Barry Steelman sentenced Birt to 20 years in prison for the death of Warren Ransom, 33.
Back in March of 2014, Ransom’s body was discovered on Hooker Road. Authorities determined Ramson was shot to death at close range.
A witness led police to Birt who was eventually arrested and charged with criminal homicide and aggravated robbery. A grand jury later indicted Birt on those charges.
Prior to the Wednesday morning plea in court, Birt was facing first degree murder which meant life in prison with no chance for parole.
District Attorney Lance Pope told News 12 that evidence in the case was too overwhelming for Birt to plead not guilty and go through a jury trial that was scheduled for February 9.
“After a review of the evidence he and his attorney made us an offer to plea guilty to second degree murder and a term of 20 years. We discussed the disposition with the police department and notified the victim’s family,” Pope said.
Birt will be 53 years old by the time he leaves prison because part of the plea deal means he will not be eligible for early parole.
The charge of aggravated robbery was dropped.
Birt is no stranger to criminal court. Court records show he has two pages of felony convictions that range from robbery, armed burglary and theft to possession of cocaine. He’s been in and out of court since 2000.
