How to Stay Safe While Hiking
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – Last week, a hiker died after falling on Sunset Rock and two hikers were rescued on Mowbray Mountain when floodwaters trapped them.
These are just two of several incidents concerning hikers in our area in recent weeks.
With the holiday weekend and a heat wave incoming, many are likely planning to hit the trails in the next week.
Before hitting the trail, there are several factors you should consider in planning your hikes.
Erik Hancock a Customer Relations Specialist for Outdoor Chattanooga, said, “What you want to do is to make sure you’re aware of the terrain you’re going to. Are you going to that has a lot of elevation gain as you are hiking? Are you going to be hiking near a place that has a creek bed. All of those questions are a really good thing to answer.”
Other things to consider include the forecast, bringing water and other nutrients, and having proper footwear.
Hancock also advises that you choose a trail that is appropriate for your fitness level.
