Howard’s Ashley Wilbur helps students succeed through challenges

For the past two years WDEF News 12 has had the pleasure of recognizing outstanding teachers with the Golden Apple Award.

We’re proud to continue that tradition.

At Hamilton County’s Howard Academy of Academics and Technology one special English teacher uses her classroom to connect with her kids and help push them through the tough times.

Ashley Wilbur is this week’s Golden Apple Award winner.

Welcome to Ashley Wilbur’s English Class… Today the class is discussing Tears of a Tiger by Sharon Draper.

It’s about a young man struggling to overcome obstacles… Something to which Ms. Wilbur says most students can relate, "Life isn’t easy and they always need someone to push them along this journey."

Ashley Wilbur wants to be that someone… For 3 years she’s been in front of the class, but it hasn’t been too long since the Howard grad was sitting in a desk.

She says that means she gets her students and she knows what they’re going through, "I wanted to come back and make a difference in the lives of those, just like the ones that invested in me."

For at least one family… It’s made all the difference in the world

Howard Parent Cassandra Robinson reads from her Golden Apple nomination letter, "If it wasn’t for Ms. Wilbur I don’t know what I would have done. She helped my daughter get through some tough times."

Ms. Robinson says Ms. Wilbur helped support her daughter Shateria through her first year of high school and a teenage pregnancy.

She says the teacher was always there with a word of encouragement and wouldn’t accept excuses, "Ms. Wilbur’s just right on time. She’s a God sent angel."

10th Grader Shateria Parker says, "She can relate to the children’s problems. Any that they have going on at home."

Wilbur says she’s just answering the call. She knows what these kids are capable of and says it’s her job to help them reach the stars, "To see kids moving past their situations and going past what they thought they could do and to actually move into a realm of limitless boundaries."
