Human Rights Committee held first public hearing on Wednesday
WASHINGTON, D.C. (WDEF) — Senators Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee and Jon Ossoff of Georgia are crossing party lines.
They are teaming up to provide better care for children in foster care.
Both Georgia and Tennessee are taking an internal look at their foster care system.
They want to make it a safer environment for kids in the system.
They hope that their collaboration will inspire other states to follow suit.
People living in the foster care system told their stories to the non partisan committee.
Both Senator Ossoff and Blackburn spoke during the Committee.
“DFACs fails in 84% of cases to quote make concerted efforts to assess and address risks in safety concerns in their own homes or in foster care. Which is a federal child protection benchmark,” Georgia Senator Jon Ossoff said.
“It is our duty to make certain that these children are going to be safe and that they are going to be protected from predator’s. That they are going to be protected from traffickers. That they know that they are surrounded by people who honestly care,” Tennessee Senator Marsha Blackburn said.
