Humane Educational Society Opens New Low-Cost Spay and Neuter Clinic
Chattanooga, TN (WDEF) The Humane Educational Society has officially opened a new low-cost spay and neuter clinic, a project leaders say has been years in the making.
“This is something we’ve wanted to do for a long time,” said Interim Executive Director Dr. Tai Federico. “The spay clinic is an opportunity for us to help members of the community that may not be able to afford veterinary services at full price to get their animals spayed or neutered, which we’re hoping will cut down on the number of unwanted litters in the future.”
The clinic is open to all pet owners, regardless of where they live, and offers procedures at a fraction of the normal cost. Federico says it’s part of a broader mission to improve animal welfare while also supporting pet owners.
“One purpose is to help the community—both the animals and the people living here,” he said. “It’s also a way for the Humane Society to generate resources so we can continue our mission in the community.”
While spaying and neutering are routine procedures, proper recovery care is essential. Sarah Callahan, Director of Veterinary Services at the Humane Educational Society, says owners should plan for at least 24 hours of rest for their pets after surgery.
“It’s fairly standard surgery, but just like with human surgery, you want the animal to rest,” Callahan said. “They may not have the same appetite, and we don’t want them running or playing with other animals until those incisions heal. Monitoring is key.”
The Humane Educational Society hopes the new clinic will not only provide affordable access to veterinary care but also reduce shelter intake by preventing unwanted litters.
Appointments are now available through the Humane Educational Society’s website.
