Hunter Road in Ooltewah still flooded and looking for help

OOLTEWAH, Tennessee (WDEF) – Residents in an area on Hunter Road are wondering where the help is.

They are still swamped from last week’s flooding.

“We’re all frustrated up here. I just wish somebody would listen.”

Eight houses on Hunter Road in Ooltewah still sit in flood waters. The affects of last week’s rain have barely receded, and residents aren’t happy with the response they’ve received from the county and state.

Marilyn Graham: “I feel kind of desperate because there’s been no help. It has receded some, but it should be gone by now.”

Danny Mahaffey: “No help from the county or nobody. The Governor, nobody will look out for us people up here.”

Neighbors suspect a clogged drainage ditch as part of the problem. However, Hamilton County says all the land affected is private property — tying the county’s hands from doing anything.

Mahaffey: “This stuff here can be replaced. But the aggravation from it, I don’t know if I can ever get over that.”

The problem isn’t just the flooding… it’s what’s in the water as well.

Graham: “People’s septics are running in it, and gas from sheds and all kinds of chemicals from people’s sheds and everything so yes, it’s definitely got to be poison.”

Mahaffey: “You just kind of feel like throwing your hands up and just walking away from here. I would never recommend anybody move to Hamilton County. It’s as simple as that.”
