I-24 project causes traffic buildup in Downtown Chattanooga
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) — Traffic has been a problem for many people in the downtown area lately due to construction.
Road closures along with traffic detours have been ongoing.
A project to improve an interchange on Interstate 24 has caused traffic buildups along Broad and Market Streets.
Officials say the project is designed to improve the safety and operation of the interstate, while also improving access to Highway 27.
The area around I-24 near Exit 178 is often seen as the gateway to Chattanooga from the west.
The project is designed to accommodate both current and future traffic demands.
“We always encourage drivers to know before they go. We want people to remember that they can always use our TDOT Smartway system to check traffic conditions on all of our roads before they leave for their destinations,” TDOT Community Relations Officer Rae-Anne Bradley said.
One remaining road closure part of the project is located on a section of Williams Street.
The TDOT Smartway system can be used to monitor traffic and figure out alternate routes.
TDOT asks that drivers be patient during these times as they wrap up roadwork approaching August.
