Buyer To Consume 77-Year-Old Royal Wedding Cake Slice

A slice of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip’s 1947 wedding cake sold for nearly $3,700 at auction and will be eaten by a devoted royal enthusiast. The fruit cake, stored for decades by the family of Chief Petty Officer F. Lownes, was sold by Reeman Dansie Auctioneers in Essex. Despite its age, the cake garnered significant interest, highlighting the enduring appeal of British royal memorabilia. The winning bidder, Gerry Layton, plans to consume a portion of the cake at a banquet on the Royal Yacht Britannia for his 65th birthday after flambéing it in rum for safety precautions. Layton also owns a piece of Charles and Diana’s wedding cake. (Newser)
